Race 1: A & T TRADING MAIDEN H'CAP – 1000M

KARMA CAN WAIT – Jumped away awkwardly and lost significant ground. A post-race veterinary examination revealed lameness in the near foreleg. Trainer S. Ryan was advised that the horse will require a veterinary clearance prior to being permitted to race again.

GIFTED FORTUNE – Slow to begin.

BITHARD – Raced three wide without cover.

ISLAND EMPIRE – M. Hellyer reported that his mount laid out under pressure in the home straight.

MISS CHATTERING – Slow to begin.

Race 2: FOUR N TWENTY CLASS 4 H'CAP – 1200M

QUICK KETCH – When asked to comment on the horse’s performance, apprentice H. English indicated that the horse overraced in the early stages and when asked for an effort after passing the 600m failed to respond and was quite disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings. Trainer S. Kirkwood advised stewards that veterinary tests, including blood tests, would be performed on the horse, the results of which he would report to stewards, and in light of today’s performance, he would give consideration to sending the horse for a spell.

STAY SCHTUM – Raced wide throughout. J. Lloyd reported that the horse hung in in the straight and was awkward in its action following the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed an elevated heart rate.

FINNOMONY – Bumped by another runner after leaving the 100m.

MURT REYNOLDS – Held up for clear running and rider was obliged to stop riding and alter course on a number of occasions before obtaining clear running leaving the 200m.

SON OF JUSTICE – When questioned regarding the tactics adopted in leading today, apprentice R. Johnston-Bell indicated that as the trainer had informed stewards two starts ago at the Gold Coast the horse would be ridden forward, he was complying with similar instructions in today’s event. Stewards noted his comments.

ZOFF OF THE WORLD – Stewards asked apprentice S. Fawke to comment on the horse’s performance. He indicated that although the horse raced very greenly throughout the event, it responded well to his riding in the home straight and he was obliged to stop riding and alter course near the 100m in order to secure clear running. He was of the view that the horse would take benefit from the run and he had recommended to connections to step the horse up over 1600m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a small amount of blood in the offside nostril as a result of external trauma.

DAWN FIGHTER – Shifted out passing the 400m when held up for clear running, inconveniencing another runner.

FAIRY DANCER – Inconvenienced by another runner after passing the 400m.

OUR CINDERELLA – Slow to begin.

SOUND INVESTMENT – Stewards questioned trainer L. Birchley and rider J. Lloyd regarding the tactics adopted which, as the horse led in today’s event, were in contrast to the horse’s recent racing pattern. Mr Birchley indicated that with the addition of winkers today he was content to have jockey Lloyd attempt to ride forward from the wide alley, however, as the horse has been beginning awkwardly he was not confident that the horse would begin well and may be obliged to go back and settle at the tail of the field. Stewards advised Mr Birchley that in similar circumstances he would be expected to comply with his requirements under AR. 135A and advise stewards of any alterations in tactics. J. Lloyd indicated that the horse hung out from the 800m until entering the home straight and he felt that this had a detrimental effect on the overall performance, and the horse weakened over the concluding stages as a result. He added he was obliged to steady near the 100m when placed in restricted room.
