Race 5: Volvo Sunshine Coast Class 3 H'cap – 1800m TRALEE CHORUS – Held up for clear running from the home turn until passing the 100m. Stewards inquired into the tactics adopted by apprentice S. Lacy from the 600m. Of concern was Miss Lacy’s option to direct her mount to the inside of BEXSTAR approaching the 400m after having been positioned to the outside of that horse and that had she remained outside that horse, this would have afforded her clear running. However when shifting back to the inside, this resulted in her mount being held up until leaving the 100m. Apprentice Lacy indicated that she had been instructed by trainer S. Mackinnon that from the wide alley she was to settle the horse in the second half of the field with cover and then attempt to secure clear running closer to the fence where possible as he felt that the racing surface was superior closer to the fence. Apprentice Lacy indicated that after racing behind REGULARITY, which had commenced to weaken from the 800m, she had shifted wider to improve around that horse, and then approaching the home turn attempted to adhere to her instructions in staying closer to the fence. She agreed in hindsight that as she did not have clear running to the inside of BEXSTAR when she attempted this manoeuvre and would have been better served remaining to the outside of that horse. Trainer S. Mackinnon confirmed these instructions however indicated that he would have preferred that once TRALEE CHORUS was positioned wider on the track, for apprentice Lacy to continue to shift wider to secure clear running. After considering all the evidence, stewards were satisfied that apprentice Lacy’s actions had affected the horse’s overall position and that her decision to shift back to the inside was an error. Stewards advised Miss Lacy that given her status as a non metropolitan apprentice, they ruled that no further action should be taken other than to refer this ride to the Training Department to ensure Miss Lacy has further tuition in regards to similar situations.
