Race 1: Iron Jack Class 1 H’cap -  1800M

MONTEZUMA – Tightened for room and had to be steadied at the start.  Held up rounding the turn and had difficulty obtaining clear running until leaving the 300m.

MAGIC SEASON – Overraced in the early and middle stages.

SIR CASS – Bumped by another runner over the concluding stages.

HEAT SHIELD – Laid out under pressure in the home straight, inconveniencing another runner.

ARISTOCAT – Stewards asked jockey D. Browne to comment on the performance, which was below market expectations.  He indicated that he was extremely disappointed with the performance after having travelled in a favourable position behind the lead throughout the event and travelled strongly after passing the 600m, the horse  failed to respond to his riding after passing the 500m and weakened badly in the home straight.  A  post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities and a swab sample was taken. Trainer Mr S. Kendrick confirmed his disappointment and indicated he would have veterinary examinations carried out and would consider sending the horse for a spell.  Stewards advised Mr Kendrick that should he elect to continue with its current preparation, he would be required to officially trial the horse prior to its next race start.

Race 2: James Squire Class 4 H’cap – 1200m

LEGENDARY LUKE – Slow to begin.

PEKING ROAD –  Stewards questioned jockey M. Powell regarding the tactics adopted and the overall performance of the mare. Of concern to stewards was jockey Powell’s riding in the early stages when  it appeared he had opportunity to allow the horse to stride forward of PERFORATION and take up a position outside the lead. Of further concern was jockey Powell’s reasons for losing ground in the middle stages before shifting back to the inside near the 400m.  Jockey Powell explained to stewards the pre-race instructions had been to attempt to settle outside PERFORATION, which he felt would  cross to a position behind the leader. He indicated that when this did not occur, in hindsight he would have been better served pressing forward of that horse in the middle stages, and agreed with stewards that this was a poor decision to remain 3 wide. He explained he did so as he may have been able to secure a position behind PERFORATION, however when LEGENDARY LUKE remained following that horse he was unable to cross and this caused him to  be caught  3 wide. He also explained that when he crossed closer to the fence near the 400m it was in an attempt to give the horse some cover before entering the home straight.  Jockey Powell  added in hindsight it was  too late in the race to do this and was again a poor decision on his part.  He added that despite these errors  during the event, he was disappointed in the finishing effort of the mare, which weakened under pressure in the home straight. Trainer S. Kendrick agreed that jockey Powell had ridden the mare poorly, however was not of the view, given its finishing effort, that his actions had ultimately affected the performance. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.  Stewards agreed that this had been a poorly judged ride by jockey Powell, however given the horse’s finishing effort, which stewards did not believe was as a result of jockey Powell’s actions, and also given that jockey Powell has only recently returned from a lengthy disqualification and this was only his second provincial ride in approximately 2 years, stewards were satisfied that no action should be taken against jockey Powell.

Race 3: Chaps Menswear Ratings Band 0-60 H’cap – 1200m

CAPTAIN CLAYTON – The start of this race was delayed when apprentice J. Hodge requested a veterinary examination of the  horse.  Subsequently the gelding was cleared to take its place in the field.  Raced wide throughout.

SHOW NO SHAME – Overraced at heels approaching the 800m.

Race 4: Sunshine Toyota CG&E Maiden H’cap – 1300m

ELVISON – Near the 200m was taken in and was obliged to check from the heels of JACARANDA PRINCE, which shifted in abruptly. Stewards inquired into  this incident, and after taking evidence from apprentice S. Lacy, rider of ELVISION and jockey D. Browne, rider of JACARANDA PRINCE, were satisfied that at this point of the race JACARANDA PRINCE shifted in abruptly when struck with the whip.  Stewards accepted that jockey Browne had attempted to straighten his mount in a reasonable time.  Stewards advised the connections of JACARANDA PRINCE that a warning would be placed on the racing manners of the horse. Stewards noted that a warning had been placed on the horse’s racing manners previously, however JACARANDA PRINCE had  raced subsequently without incident and therefore took no further action.

Race 5: All Pest Qld Class 2 H’cap – 1300m

BEXTAR – Slow to begin. Then overraced in the early stages before being permitted to stride forward to a position outside the lead.  Jockey M. Hellyer reported it had not been his intention to race in such a forward position.

Race 6: XXXX Gold F&M Maiden H’cap – 1300m

MISS KATIE – Slow to begin. Bled during the event. Connections were advised that the horse would be barred from racing for a period of 3 months.

FATA MORGANA – Jockey M. Hellyer reported his mount laid out from the 800m until entering the home straight.

WAY TOO SASSY – When wide and overracing in the early stages was permitted to stride forward to a position outside the lead passing the 700m.

KITTY SOFTPAWS – Held up after passing the 600m and shifted out to improve.

CALISTO – Steadied off heels near the 500m.

JANEMY – Raced 3 wide without cover.

ESOR – Held up for clear running when passing the 400m, and continued to be held up until shifting wider near the 250m to obtain clear running.
