FLYING EDDIE – Jockey N. Fazackerley reported that, in his opinion, his mount failed to handle the rain affected conditions. He stated that whilst  the horse travelled well during the middle stages on the bridle, when asked for an effort did not stretch out and he attributed this to the rain affected conditions.

MCKENZIE COUNTY – Returned to scale without its off fore plate.

DON’TDIE WONDERING – When asked to comment on the performance,  jockey J. Orman  indicted whilst he was obliged to race 3 wide outside the lead without cover he did not feel that this had an overall detrimental effect on its performance. He  stated that the filly  improved when asked for an effort shortly after straightening, however over the final 150m  commenced to race greenly under pressure and weakened.  He added DON’TDIE WONDERING, in his opinion,  travelled comfortably in the rain affected conditions, but was unable to explain the disappointing performance.  Trainer  B. Healy was also asked to comment on the performance. It was his opinion that racing 3 wide on a heavy track did have an effect on the overall performance, however he was still disappointed with the horse’s finishing  effort and it is his intention  to have an endoscopic examination performed in the coming days and undertook to  report back stewards with any findings.  A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.

Following this event the track rating was upgraded to Heavy 8.

HAPPY BIBI – A post race veterinary examination  revealed the horse to be suffering from mild heat stress.

DEE DAY DIVA – Trainer’s representative  Mr R. O’Leary was questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance from the horse’s most recent start. He indicated the filly did not handle the tight turning racing circuit at Kilcoy, noting that the horse hung out rounding the home turn when under pressure to improve into the race.  He indicated the stable did anticipate the horse would appreciate racing at a bigger track today, however were concerned the horse may not  handled the rain affected conditions.  Stewards noted the comments.  Stewards also reviewed the race footage from the horse’s most recent start which confirmed the comments of Mr O’Leary.

1300m

ROYAL ATOM – Slow to begin.  Stewards questioned jockey A. Spinks regarding the tactics he adopted in the straight.  Of concern to stewards were his actions to shift back to the inside of CAPE WICKHAM when it appeared he had opportunity to shift to the outside of that horse early in the home straight, which would have afforded  his mount an uninterrupted run to the line.  He indicated it had been his intention to shift to the outside of that runner however when CAPE WICKHAM  commenced to shift out under pressure  he elected to shift back to the inside as he was reluctant to commit himself to the outside when concerned  he would be taken wider.  He added, he did not feel shifting back to the inside had impeded his vigour in any way despite being  obliged to shift further to the inside of LE DRAMA  approaching the 200m.  Stewards after considering the comments and viewing the patrol footage were satisfied with jockey Spinks’ explanation.

CAPE WICKHAM – Tightened for room on jumping away. Hung out for the majority of the race.

DON’T DOUBT LARA -   Jockey T.Marshall, rider of VICTORY DANCE, was found guilty of  a charge of careless riding in that he did ride in a careless manner in the home straight after passing the 300m whilst placing heavy pressure  on his mount he failed to stop riding and straighten the gelding when it was inclined to lay in, which resulted in the running of DON’T TELL LARA being restricted on a number of occasions after passing the 250m and ultimately over the concluding stages DON’T DOUBT LARA being placed in restricted room and having its rightful running taken,, resulting in jockey L. Cassidy having to take hold of DON’T DOUBT LARA. Jockey Marshall  was suspended from riding in races for a period of  8 days, to commence at midnight, 27 January and to expire at midnight, 4 February.

As a result of this incident stewards advised jockey J. Murphy, rider of STRYKING PRINCESS, to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

DUTCHESS OF ROSE – Raced 3 wide without cover.

BAMBALAM – Apprentice A. Thompson was questioned in relation to his riding of BAMBALAM and the significant margin he established during the  middle stages. He advised stewards his instructions were to initially obtain cover which he attempted to do, however was unable to do so in the early stages and therefore elected to allow the horse to stride forward and secure the lead in an attempt to have his mount settle.  He indicated he obtained the lead in the back straight, and  after restraining,  the horse commenced to fight against being restrained and it became unbalanced and its breathing, he felt, was restricted. As a result of this he allowed the horse to stride forward and he felt his mount travelled more comfortably.  Stewards viewed the patrol footage and accepted the explanation tendered by apprentice Thompson.
