BETTER OFF – Rider N Fazackerley reported the gelding raced keenly in the early stages, did not travel from the 800 metres and laid in under pressure in the home straight and was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer S Kirkwood advised he would be taking blood tests during the week and would consider spelling BETTER OFF in light of today’s disappointing performance.

FINSCEAL – Slow to begin.

TAKEN BY THEFT – Began awkwardly. Over-raced in the early and middle stages. Raced three wide without cover for majority of the event. When questioned regarding tactics adopted which resulted in his mount racing three wide from barrier 3, rider M Du Plessis indicated that prior to the event he anticipated being able to cross BETTER OFF and settle midfield, however after beginning awkwardly he recognized in the early stages he could not cross runners to the inside and attempted to restrain in order to settle behind BETTER OFF. He added it was at a point near the 1000 metres when TAKEN BY THEFT refused to settle when restrained and commenced to race erratically, and then when leaving the 900 metres he allowed the filly to stride and it increase its tempo significantly, at the same point the leaders also quickened the tempo and, as a result, he was unable to obtain a position closer to the fence. M Du Plessis further added that despite this he was pleased with the overall performance and that TAKEN BY THEFT found the line strongly.  Stewards noted the explanation.
