GENERAL
 
Stewards permitted the following jockey to ride overweight:
Race 1: Todd Banks – SASSY TAP plus 1/2kg at 55.5kg.
 
 
Race 1: DOUBLE R GROUP MAIDEN PLATE  2200M
 
HOW YA BEEN ANYWAY – Over-raced in the early stages.Left a mid-field trailing position near the 1700m and progressed forward to lead the event from the 1400m. After passing the winning post and when returning to the saddling enclosure the saddle on the horse shifted resulting in some packing, including a lead bag, being displaced, which was confirmed on review of the patrol footage. On weighing in J Lloyd was deemed to have carried the allocated weight and correct weight declared. Shifted the off-hind plate in running. J Lloyd, rider of HOW YA BEEN ANYWAY, was reprimanded pursuant to AR132(7)(a) (ii) for use of the whip on 6 occasions prior to the 100m, one more than permitted.
 
LICENCE TO THRILL – Over-raced in the early stages.
 
AUTUMN SHOW – Left a rearward trailing position near the 1200m and progressed forward to lead the event from the 1000m. R Wiggins, rider of AUTUMN SHOW, had his licence to ride in races suspended for 7 days to commence midnight 9th January up to and including midnight 16th January 2024 pursuant to AR132(5) for use of the whip 17 times in totality.
 
READY FOR VEGAS – Weakened from the 700m.Rider W D’Avila could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer I Turner indicated READY FOR VEGAS would now be sent for a spell however was advised a warning would be placed on the horse for a poor performance.
 
PLEADEEL – From the wide barrier restrained at the start to a rearward position with cover.
 
SASSY TAP (NZ) – Change of tactics, with the addition of blinkers more forward if circumstances permit. Ridden accordingly.
 
 
Race 2: CALOUNDRA RSL QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP 1000M
 
 
The start of this event was delayed 2 minutes to hold for an interstate thoroughbred event.
 
BUTT HEADS – Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
SPEEDY GRACE – Momentarily raced in restricted room approaching the home turn.
 
REVITUP CHARLIE – Approaching the winning post steadied from the heels of BALALAIKA BIRD which shifted out under pressure. G Cartwright, rider of BALALAIKA BIRD, was severely reprimanded under AR131(a) for careless riding in this incident.
 
Following this event, the track was upgraded to a Soft 6.
 
 
 
Race 3: MARTIN COLLINS AUSTRALIA BENCHMARK 60 HANDICAP 1000M
 
MOST DAZZLING – Slow to muster speed in the early stages.
 
SISTA ELENORE – Trainer D Hansen was fined $100 pursuant to LR67(1) for the late declaration of rider on the mare. Slow to begin.
 
ADALIE – When asked to comment on the performance rider A Jones reported the horse travelled comfortably during the event, however when placed under pressure in the home straight ADALIE did not let down as expected and was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed symptoms of mild heat stress.
 
BARBARY ROYALE – Laid out under pressure over final 200m.
 
IT'S HELLS BELLS – Fractious after being loaded into the barriers and as a result was slow to begin.
 
 
 
Race 4: PROTECTORAL QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD COLTS AND GELDINGS MAIDEN HANDICAP 1200M
 
AZUKI – Jumped in abruptly at the start. Taken wider rounding the home turn when SOLOMON’S RULE shifted out to improve. Raced 3 wide with cover throughout.
 
DATINKA – Held up approaching the home turn. Near the 300m disappointed for a run between OPTIMUS MAXIMUS and SOLOMON’S RULE before shifting wider to secure clear running a short distance later.
 
SOLOMON'S RULE – Checked at the start when AZUKI jumped in abruptly.
 
LIKE SMOKE – Slow to begin. Raced wide throughout.
 
THE MERCHANT – Bumped on jumping.
 
 
Race 5: BARRIER REEF POOLS RATINGS BAND 0 - 58 HANDICAP 1800M
 
 
STAR CHANCE – Raced wide throughout.
 
STEP ON FIRE – At the request of the rider, underwent a veterinary examination on arrival at the barriers and was cleared to start. Laid out under pressure in the final 150m. Rider L Tarrant reported it was not his intention to lead, however after beginning very well and with limited speed shown by runners drawn to the inside, he elected to allow STEP ON FIRE to stride forward and lead the event.
 
SHEZA SNIPER – Laid in under pressure in the home straight. When asked to comment on the performance, rider R Dolan advised the horse was under pressure from the 500m and raced one-paced from that point onwards.
 
SOCK'EMSID – Change of tactics, more conservative in the early stages. Ridden accordingly.
 
TONI TOO – When moving onto the course proper contacted the enclosure gate, underwent a veterinary examination on arrival at the barriers and was cleared to start. Laid in under pressure in the home straight and as a result approaching the winning post brushed with WILLNOTQUIT.
 
WILLNOTQUIT – Brushed by TONI TOO approaching the winning post.
 
KAHRABA – Slow to begin. Held up for clear running between the entrance to the home straight until passing the 300m. D Smith, rider of KAHRABA, was fined $300 pursuant to AR132(7)(a) (ii) for use of the whip on 7 occasions prior to the 100m, two more than permitted.
 
PAPAL MISS – Inside the final 100m obliged to shift to the inside of STEP ON FIRE to secure clear running.
 
 
 
 
Race 6: WIMMERS PREMIUM SOFT DRINKS QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD FILLIES MAIDEN HANDICAP 1200M
 
JEALOUS - Slow to begin.
 
DUNTROON LASS – Blundered on jumping and lost ground.
 
SWEET KISSES – A short distance after the start shifted in and away from DUNTROON LASS.
 
SEXY LEXY – Slow to begin. Passing the 1000m momentarily steadied from heels.
 
LADY ROTH – Raced greenly throughout the event and as a consequence near the 1000m momentarily was steadied from the heels of SEXY LEXY.
 
GYPSY WHITE SOCKS – Began awkwardly.
 
PARIS ART – Raced wide for the majority of the event.
 
 
Race 7: BUTLER MCDERMOTT LAWYERS CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1200M
 
The start of this event was delayed approximately 3 minutes when PRIVATE TENDER required farrier attention after being presented to the saddling enclosure.
 
PRIVATE TENDER – The near hind plate required refitting after entering the saddling enclosure. Underwent a veterinary examination on arrival at the barriers and was cleared to start. Crowded for room and checked near the 350m. At a subsequent inquiry, in the presence of senior rider S Collett, apprentice O Kendall, rider of ROAR HIDE, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding pursuant to AR131(a) in that when pressuring her mount made insufficient effort to prevent her horse from shifting out contacting PRIVATE TENDER being taken out, crowded for room, and losing its rightful running near the 350m. The licence of apprentice Kendall to ride in races was suspended for a period of 9 days to commence midnight 6th January up to and including 15th January 2024.  
 
FIRE LOVE – Raced wide throughout the event. Bumped on the hindquarters near the 350m. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
FIREBIRD TWO – Laid out rounding the home turn. Rider M Butler was fined $200 pursuant to AR211(1) after returning to scale 1kg over his allocated weight.
 
ROAR HIDE – Commenced to lay out from the 800m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow post-race recovery.
 
 
Race 8: TAB BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP 1400M
 
Due to the delay in the previous event, this race started approximately 2 minutes after the advertised start time.
 
MISTER HEMSWORTH – Change of tactics, to be ridden more forward if circumstances permit. After being crowded shortly after the start settled in a midfield position with cover.
 
DARCHINIAN – Began awkwardly. Approaching the 200m improved onto heels when disappointed for a run before then being obliged to shift wider on the track to secure clear running.
 
CHANCE WITH WOLVES – Crowded for room and had to be restrainedapproaching the 200m. At a subsequent inquiry, in the presence of senior rider S Collett, apprentice O Kendall, was severely reprimanded pursuant to AR131(a) in that when riding her mount along permitted her horse to shift in resulting in CHANCES WITH WOLVES being crowded for room and having to be restrained.
 
LIVINGSTONES – Held up leaving the 250m before shifting to the inside of BAMBALAM to secure clear running a short distance later.
 
ATLANTIC ROYAL – Raced in restricted room for a short distance leaving the 300m.
 
PEDAL TO THE METAL – As apprentice S Champkin was ill, and no rider available at the weight, Stewards permitted T Banks to ride the horse at 57.5kg, 1kg over its allocated weight.
 
PARISIAN LADY – Slow to begin.
 
BIRKIN BLACK – Over-raced in the early and middle stages of the event.
 
BAMBALAM – After being loaded into the barriers, reared resulting in its nearside front leg becoming momentarily cast, was removed, underwent a veterinary examination, and cleared to start.
