SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT : Mackay Turf Club Thursday 20th October 2016

Race 1: Mackay State High School QTIS 3-Y-O Maiden Handicap – 1100 metres

THE MOUNTAIN LION – Trainer T. Simmons reported that the horse had pulled up lame following its engagement in this event. Subsequent examination had revealed that it had sustained a fracture of the near fore knee. Mrs Simmons stated that the horse will now be retired. She was advised that, in the event that THE MOUNTAIN LION was to return to racing, a veterinary certificate of fitness will be required.

------------

Race 1: The Cathedral School 1917-2017 Centenary Maiden Handicap - 1200 metres

1st – SNAPPY LEGEND 2nd – MANSALE 3rd – WULFIES LADY 4th – JUSTIFICATION

WULFIES LADY – Began awkwardly.

IN OUR SIGHTS – Was slowly away after beginning awkwardly. Was restrained from heels near the 600 metres. Passing the 250 metres was shifted around heels to obtain clear running.

SNAPPY LEGEND – Jockey S. Wilson was fined $200 under A.R. 137A for using his whip on the mare prior to the 100 metres on one more occasion than is permitted under the rule.

SASSY DRAGON – Raced ungenerously when placed under pressure on straightening.

Race 2: The Cathedral School Past Students Association BenchMark 60 Handicap – 1200 metres

1st – METEOROS 2nd - JUMBO RUMBO 3rd – BRAVE BOW 4th – SLEW LEFT

BRAVE BOW – Prior to the race connections advised Stewards that they intended to have the horse ridden positively out of the barriers and take up a forward position if possible. Public announcements were made to that effect. When questioned regarding the performance, Jockey B. Thomson confirmed the instruction to lead if possible and therefore she rode the horse hard from the barriers in an attempt to comply with the instruction. However, her mount did not respond to her urgings as expected and as a result got further back than anticipated. Jockey Thomson added that her mount had been inclined to race ungenerously when positioned to the inside of other runners in the early stages. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any significant findings.

EGIPTIENNE – Fractious in the barriers.

JUMBO RUMBO – Fractious in the barriers, contacted the gate as the barriers were activated. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding did not reveal any significant findings.

PERCULES – Prior to the race trainer Mr L. Smerdon made an application to remove the Norton bit and add a bit lifter to the horse’s approved gear. Stewards acceded to the change of gear and accepted Mr Smerdon’s explanation. Jockey W. D’Avila dropped his whip near the 100 metres. After being disappointed for a narrow run at the 100 metres was forced to switch around heels to obtain clear running.

WORTHY HERO – Began awkwardly. As a result Jockey A. Taylor lost her near side iron placing her at a disadvantage in the early stages, and regained it near the 800 metres.

TIERES ROCK – Raced wide without cover throughout.

RACING HARADA – Raced wide throughout.

Race 3: The Cathedral School of St Anne & St James Open Handicap – 1400 metres

1st – BLAME GAME 2nd – BOBCAT 3rd - SUNSET IN NEW YORK 4th - CLEAVER

BOBCAT – After the gelding was placed in the barriers the tongue-tie became displaced and was unable to be refitted. The gelding was permitted to race without that gear.

CLEAVER – Slow into stride. Although the gelding raced in accordance with its usual racing pattern, when asked for an effort over the concluding stages failed to respond as expected. Jockey G. Kliese considered that the performance was disappointing. Trainer T. Butts advised CLEAVER had also been disappointing at its most recent start, and it is now his intention to give the horse a short let-up prior to racing again.

SUNSET IN NEW YORK – Was inclined to over-race when crossed by another runner at about the 1200 metres. When questioned in relation to his riding of the mare down the running, Jockey F. Edwards said that SUNSET IN NEW YORK fails to perform at its best when the whip is applied and in the past has raced better when ridden vigorously hands and heels.

Race 4: The Cathedral School P&F Pallarenda Stakes QTIS 2-Y-O Fillies Maiden Plate – 1000 metres

1st – ALL GIRLS ROCK 2nd – CRAIGLEA AIRLIE 3r d – KISSAYKISS 4th – SPECIAL STYLE

CRAIGLEA CETINA – Bumped by another runner shortly after beginning very awkwardly, then shifted out abruptly and made heavy contact with CRAIGLEA OREA and took no further competitive part in the event. Stable representative Mr S. Johnston was advised that the filly will be required to perform satisfactorily in a trial prior to racing again.

CRAIGLEA OREA – Slowly away after beginning awkwardly. Heavily contacted by another runner, which shifted out abruptly on jumping, and then shifted in, losing significant ground.

KISSAYKISS – Shifted out abruptly after jumping and bumped another runner. Inclined to race greenly under pressure down the running. Raced wide without cover throughout. Following the race stewards questioned Jockey W. D’Avila in relation to the performance of the short-priced favourite. He advised Stewards that Trainer Mrs S. D’Avila had informed him that the filly had become dehydrated following its barrier trial win in Cairns, but had recovered within 24 hours and was cleared to race by Trainer D’Avila’s veterinary surgeon. After interviewing Trainer D’Avila Stewards issued her with a severe reprimand under the provisions of A.R. 140(a) in that she had failed to notify stewards of the horse’s condition. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any significant findings.

SPECIAL STYLE – Inclined to race greenly in the early stages.

CRAIGLEA AIRLIE – Inclined to shift out under pressure over the concluding stages.

Race 5: The Cathedral School P&F Pallarenda Stakes QTIS 2-Y-O Colts, & Geldings Maiden Plate – 1000 metres

1st – MOLONGLE FIRE 2nd – CRAIGLEA WEAPON 3rd – OUR ATOM 4th – CRAIGLEA MAXX

ALLROUND GLORY – Whilst parading to the barriers dislodged Apprentice C. Jokic and completed a circuit of the course. Stewards ordered the late scratching of the gelding at 4.12 p.m. Subsequently they ordered that all bets made on ALLROUND GLORY be refunded and that the following deductions apply:

21¢ in the dollar for the win, for the winner, MOLONGLE FIRE

16¢ in the dollar for the place for the winner, MOLONGLE FIRE

18¢ in the dollar for the place for 2nd, CRAIGLEA WEAPON

18¢ in the dollar for the place for 3rd, OUR ATOM

MOLONGLE FIRE – Fractious in the mounting yard. On straightening shifted out and hampered OUR ATOM.

OUR ATOM – Raced wide without cover for the majority of the race.

WE’LL BEAT IT – Raced wide for the majority of the event.

REACTANT – Became fractious and threw itself down en route to the barriers, was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon behind the barriers and passed fit to start.

STUDMAN – At the start shifted ground abruptly and bumped another runner.

CRAIGLEA WEAPON – At approximately the 900 metres was checked severely when tightened between MOLONGLE FIRE, which shifted ground when racing greenly and GENERAL CHEVAL (Jockey J. Felix), which had been taken in by WE’LL BEAT IT (Jockey G. Kliese), which had shifted away from OUR ATOM (Jockey D. Simmons), which had drawn the outside barrier. In the incident CRAIGLEA WEAPON lost considerable ground.

The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow Jockey P. Cullen, the rider of CRAIGLEA WEAPON, to view the official patrol film to determine whether to lodge an objection against MOLONGLE FIRE being declared the winner. Having done so, he elected not to protest, and correct weight was declared on the judge’s numbers.

Race 6: The Cathedral School Boarding BenchMark 65 Handicap - 1400 metres

1st – SPURSONIC 2nd – SHOT OF COURAGE 3rd – RISE TO THE TOP 4th - RANGILA

The starting time for this race was amended to 4.53 p.m.

BERNICATTI – Was slowly away after jumping awkwardly. Raced wide without cover in the early and middle stages.

WANTABETHEONE – Jumped inwards at the start.

GLAMORGAN BABE – Slowly away.

SAN CARLOS – Slow to begin. Approaching the 400 metres was restrained when attempting to improve into a marginal run.

ELITE ECHELON – Raced ungenerously in the early and middle stages. Disappointed for a run passing the 300 metres.

OUR LITTLE MIRACLE – Raced wide without cover throughout.

SHOT OF COURAGE – Raced wide rounding the home turn.

ETRANGERE – Raced wide on straightening.

Stewards inquired into an incident that occurred near the 900 metres. After taking evidence from Jockey S. Watkin (ELITE ECHELON), Jockey A. Taylor (SPURSONIC) and Apprentice E. Cass (BERNICATTI), in the presence of her representative Mr P. Rowe, viewing the patrol films and acting on their own observations, Stewards established that BERNICATTI had improved to the outside of SPURSONIC and at the same time had shifted in, resulting in SPURSONIC crowding ELITE ECHELON, which was forced to check off the heels of WRITTEN INTENT (App. C. Jokic). Apprentice Cass was severely reprimanded under A.R. 137(a) and was put on notice that a similar occurrence will result in her being referred to the riding advisory panel for further assessment.

SAN CARLOS - Approaching the home turn Apprentice N. Summers had to restrain her mount when attempting to improve into a marginal run inside the heels of RANGILA (Jockey P. Cullen).
