NO OPTION – As apprentice L. Tilley was only able to claim 1 kilogram of his 1.5 kilogram allowance and no other suitable apprentice was available, he was permitted to ride the horse at that weight. L. Tilley was fined $200. Slow to begin. Steadied from heels near the 700m. When attempting to take a narrow run near the 400m to the inside of FINAL PERFORMANCE was forced to steady to avoid that runner’s heels when it shifted in marginally. Jockey B. Appo, rider of FINAL PERFORMANCE, was advised to exercise more care.

THE EQUINE BOLT – Kicked by another runner behind the gates and was examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to start. Change of tactics, to be ridden further back in the field if circumstances permit. After racing keenly in the early stages settled in third position. Bumped another runner when shifting out to improve rounding the home turn.

TREVLYN’S COL – Began awkwardly and shifted out and bumped BAY DREAMER, which lost ground. Bumped near the 600m.

BAY DREAMER – Bumped at the start and became awkward.

BLUE STAR - Apprentice J. Oliver, rider of AXFORD, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that he permitted his mount to shift in leaving the 1000m when insufficiently clear of BLUE STAR, resulting in L. Tilley, rider of BLUE STAR, being forced to take hold and shift in, resulting in SNACK ON THE RUN, which was racing to the inside of BLUE STAR and behind him, having to be checked to avoid the heels of BLUE STAR. Apprentice Oliver was suspended from riding in races for a period of 9 days, to commence at midnight, 2 April and to expire at midnight, 11 April. Held up for clear running from the 400m until the 200m. Brushed near the 200m. Shifted out abruptly under pressure over the concluding stages. Apprentice L. Tilley was advised to exercise more care.

AXFORD – Brushed near the 200m. Raced wide throughout.

Race 4: Pacific Seeds Class 3 Plate – 1625m

The start of this race was delayed when ARTISTIC CHOICE required farrier attention at the barriers.

TOUCH OF BELLA – Blundered at the start and lost ground. Stewards questioned J. Orman in relation to his tactics adopted on the mare. Jockey Orman advised that in the early stages he settled the mare in a rearward position as per his pre-race instructions and as per the horse’s customary racing pattern. Jockey Orman stated that due to the moderate tempo in the middle stages his mount commenced to overrace and therefore he elected to shift to a 3 wide position trailing I AM A WARRIOR, which was improving around the field at that point of the race. Apprentice Orman added he anticipated Anthony Allen, rider of I AM A WARRIOR, to continue to improve to the leading position after passing the 900m, and it was his intention to continue to improve forward with this horse and settle outside that runner, however when I AM A WARRIOR remained in a 3 wide position he was forced to maintain the trailing position behind that runner. Apprentice Orman went on to say that after passing the 800m his mount was continuing to overrace and therefore given the continued slow tempo of the event he elected to shift to a 4-wide position and quickly commence his run for home with the intention of establishing a winning lead as a result of this manoeuvre. Apprentice Orman further added that his mount travelled strongly from this point and felt for the majority of the home straight that he was the likely winner of the event, however was run down over the concluding stages of the race. Stewards advised apprentice Orman that they were satisfied with his explanation into his reasons for initially shifting to a 3 wide position trailing I AM A WARRIOR, and furthermore his reasoning for shifting to a 4 wide position to improve into the race. However, in their opinion it would have been more advantageous to gradually increase the tempo after committing to a 4-wide position rather than improving at the speed he did, bearing in mind this required the horse to maintain its finishing sprint for some 800m. Whilst critical of apprentice Orman’s tactics at this point of the race, they did not feel it fell below the required standard and therefore took the matter no further.

DANGEROUS LIGHT – Slow to begin.

TEMUJIN KHAN – Slow to begin. After being caught wide in the early and middle stages, was ridden forward and took up the leading position near the 600m.

PINBALL DAWN – Blundered near the 1500m.

I AM THE WARRIOR – Bumped near the 100m. Raced wide throughout.

ROCK ON IVY – Inclined to lay in under pressure in the home straight and bumped with I AM THE WARRIOR at the 100m.
