Both Jockey N Evans and App. M Schrapel were reprimanded as a result of this matter. In assessing penalty Stewards were mindful of the particular circumstances of this case. The matter was also brought to the attention of the Starter.

WILMA – Caught wide in the early stages before being allowed to stride forward, settling outside the leader near the 1000m.

HUMPHREY NO PANTS – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Raced three wide without cover throughout. When questioned regarding the ride, Jockey M. Pegus advised that due to the tempo of the race he elected to ride the gelding up on the pace instead of taking a rearward position. Stewards noted Jockey Pegus’ explanation. Stewards reprimanded Jockey Pegus for using the whip more than five times prior to the 100m. When assessing penalty, Stewards took into consideration Jockey Pegus’ good record.

RACE 5: YELLOWGLEN COLOURS CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1000m

SWIPPA DA MOUSE – Began awkwardly and threw its head shortly after the start. Stewards questioned Apprentice N. Keal as to why he did not make more use of his mount in the first 200m of the race in an attempt to obtain a more forward position. Apprentice Keal reported the horse normally races over a further distance and settles at the rear of the field and therefore was not suited by the early tempo of todays event. Stewards noted the explanation however advised Apprentice Keal that in there opinion he should have ridden with more aggression in the early stages in an attempt to place his horse in a more forward position.

DR DEEJAY – Stewards questioned Jockey N. Nishio as to why he allowed his mount set a fast pace in the early and middle stages of the race resulting in the gelding weakening over the concluding stages. Jockey Nishio reported that his instructions were to allow his mount to lead and was not to restrain his mount excessively as it is has a breathing problem. Stewards questioned trainer J. Gregory who confirmed the instructions and that the horse has breathing issue. He also mentioned that due to horse not racing in some time, in his opinion it may have been inclined to race keen.
