RACE 3: R & F STEEL BUILDINGS WARWICK MAIDEN PLATE – 1500M

After viewing the stewards’ patrol footage, A. Badger, rider of 3rd placegetter VEGANER, lodged an objection against PARIS BY NIGHT being declared 2nd, alleging interference over the concluding stages. After taking evidence from all parties and viewing the videos, stewards established that a short distance before the finishing line PARIS BY NIGHT shifted out, making slight contact with VEGANER, and then made further contact with that runner as both horses passed the winning post. As stewards could not be satisfied that the interference suffered by VEGANER, if any, had any material effect on the placings, they dismissed the protest and declared correct weight on the numbers semaphored.

AL’S MODERN – Steadied from heels near the 900m.

AZORES – Steadied when racing in restricted room shortly after the start.

RACE 5: RAHEEN STUD CLASS 3 PLATE – 1200M

The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow apprentice R. Johnston-Bell, the rider of 3rd placegetter MORE LEVERAGE, to view the photo finish print.

BIG GREEN PONY – Raced wide throughout.

MORE LEVERAGE – Began awkwardly and lost ground.

ROCKDAY – Stewards questioned apprentice M. Schrapel in relation to his tactics on the gelding during the middle stages of the event where he was travelling some distance behind the main body of the field. Apprentice Schrapel advised that as the gelding was first up today and lacked race fitness, the trainer advised him not to overly pressure the horse in the early and middle stages as this may affect the horse’s finishing sprint at the end of the event. He added that near the 900m the gelding hung out and as a result shifted wider on the track and lost some ground. He added that near the 700m the gelding commenced to race tractably again and after riding the horse along vigorously from this point it ran on well over the concluding stages. Having had the opportunity to review the film, apprentice Schrapel agreed with stewards that from the 900m, despite hanging out slightly, it would have been more advantageous to ride the gelding along at that point of the race to establish a position closer to the main body of the field, however, bearing in mind the racing manners of ROCKDAY at that point, stewards took the matter no further.

MOUNT PERRY – Slow to begin. Laid in under pressure and had to be steadied over the concluding stages.

IT’S GONNA BE GOOD – Hung out rounding the home turn.

SORORITY SISTER – Performed disappointingly. Trainer G. Schwenke indicated that he would now consider giving the mare a freshen up prior to its next start. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

SPECTACULAR ROCK – Raced keenly for a short distance leaving the 800m.

RACE 6: HYNES NEWSAGENCY CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1350M

BREATH OF LIFE – Slow to begin and lost considerable ground. When questioned in relation to his tactics, whereby after being considerably slow to begin he allowed his mount to improve around the field in a four-wide position during the middle stages, apprentice R. Johnston-Bell advised that after being slow to begin he was of the view that he would have too much ground to make up over the latter stages of the race if he remained in a rearward position and therefore in his opinion to give the horse an opportunity to win the event he elected to improve around the field during the middle stages of the event to a more forward position. He added that in his opinion the gelding’s run ended at the top of the straight and expressed disappointment with the gelding’s performance. Stewards advised apprentice Johnston-Bell that in their opinion his riding of the gelding fell below the required standard, however, bearing in mind his status of an apprentice rider, took the matter no further other than to refer his riding to the the rider skills panel for further tutelage.

BAY RUST – Bumped heavily on the hind quarters by another runner near the 1000m and became unbalanced.

QUEEN OF THE ARK – Held up rounding the home turn and for a large portion of the home straight until able to secure clear running approaching the 100m.

PURE INTELLIGENCE – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

SAGACIOUS ROSE – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

DREAMTIME GAL – Clipped the heels of another runner when shifting in to obtain a position closer to the rails at the 1000m and blundered badly.

COOL DAYS – Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages and made contact with another runner.
