OFFICIALS

Chairman of Stewards – E. Tickner
Stewards – T. Preston

GENERAL

When Apprentice B. Moffat was indisposed due to illness, Stewards permitted replacements as per the Stewards’ Race-day Summary. Apprentice Moffat was advised he requires a medical clearance prior to riding again.

Race 1: ERGON ENERGY MAIDEN PLATE (800m)

The running of this race was delayed approximately 10 minutes when OUTCROP dislodged Jockey M. Wishart enroute to the barriers and took some time to recapture.

IMPOUNDED – Raced keenly for some distance passing the 600m. Held-up for clear running rounding the home-turn and in the early part of the home straight. Laid in approaching the 200m becoming awkwardly placed on the heels of OAKFIELD PANTHER and became held-up for some distance before being shifted outwards to obtain clear running.

LITTLE VAIN – Began awkwardly and bumped on jumping. Laid in under pressure in the early part of the home straight. Shifted in under pressure approaching the 100m, crowding OAKFIELD PANTHER in onto A SIP FOR SLIPPY, who was obliged to steady when tightened for room between runners. Jockey M. Savva was reprimanded under AR131(a) for careless riding. Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages. When questioned regarding the apparent improved performance, Trainer L. Roche stated in his opinion, that the gelding had benefited from gaining a better fitness foundation leading into the event, adding that last preparation the gelding had endured wide runs in a number of starts. He further added the gelding was benefited by a more favourable ride in this event. Stewards noted the explanation.

OAKFIELD PANTHER – Began awkwardly. Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event. Approaching the 100m, crowded inwards onto A SIP FOR SLIPPY and obliged to ease when tightened by LITTLE VAIN. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

OXFORDSHIRE – Bumped on jumping.

PASS THE WINE – Began awkwardly. Raced keenly on heels for some distance passing the 600m when placed in restricted room when WET FAT CAT shifted in. Raced in restricted room for some distance approaching the 100m when attempting a marginal run between A SIP FOR SLIPPY and the running rail. Apprentice J. McMurray was reminded of his obligations under AR131(b) to ride his mounts out fully to the finish. When questioned regarding the performance, Apprentice McMurray advised in his opinion, that the gelding would be better suited over further distances. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

A SIP FOR SLIPPY – Raced in restricted room on the heels of WET FAT CAT approaching the 100m, before having to be steadied when tightened inwards by OAKFIELD PANTHER which was being crowded inwards. Raced in restricted room and unable to be fully tested over the concluding stages.

OUTCROP – Took charge of its rider during the preliminary and attempted to jump the running rail near the 700m, dislodging Jockey M. Wishart before galloping a considerable distance riderless and escaping the vicinity of the racecourse. Declared a late scratching on Stewards’ orders at 12:28pm. Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards declared that all monetary investments placed on OUTCROP be refunded with the following deductions to apply:

13c win, 12c place

Trainer’s Representative N. Hemmings was advised that due to OUTCROP’s pre-race manners, the mare would be required to obtain a further barrier certificate prior to racing again. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Jockey M. Wishart was examined by QAS officers and deemed fit to fulfill her remaining engagements.

WET FAT CAT – Shifted in near the 600m and placed PASS THE WINE in restricted room for several strides. Jockey H. Richardson was advised to exercise greater care.

MUSCATO CATH – Tightened between runners on jumping before shifting in abruptly and lost ground.

Race 2: BILL & MARGARET HOIBERG MEMORIAL QTIS MAIDEN PLATE (1350m)

CASINO CAT – Declared a late scratching at 10:11am due to transport difficulties.

SOMBANI – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination having not started in an extended period and passed fit to start. Began awkwardly and bumped. Raced keenly in the early stages. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

CITY OF TROY – Declared a late scratching at 11:10am acting on a report from Trainer N. Hemmings that the gelding was lame in the off-foreleg. Trainer N. Hemmings was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to racing again.

LEMON SURPEME – Began awkwardly.

YONAKA – Trainer L. Anderson was reprimanded under AR206 in that the gelding had been presented in a bridle which was not to the considered standard outlined in the National Gear Register.

CATCH CRIES (NZ) – Began awkwardly. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. Jockey S. Apthorpe pleaded guilty to a charge under AR132(5) in that he did use his whip on 17 occasions throughout the event, 7 of those times being prior to the 100m. Jockey Apthorpe’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period of 7 days, commencing Sunday, 23 June 2024 up to and including Saturday 29 June 2024. In assessing penalty, Stewards considered Jockey Apthorpe’s totality throughout the event, his good record in relation to the rule, and the Rider Penalty Guidelines for whip breaches. Jockey Apthorpe was advised of his rights to an appeal.

KICKS AND GIGGLES – Bumped on jumping before being hampered and lost ground.

GOLD CITY – Commenced to give ground from the 600m before being eased down by its rider. When questioned regarding the performance, Apprentice J. McMurray advised he had been instructed to lead on the filly, however the filly commenced to give ground and when concerned if something was amiss, he elected to ease his mount down. When questioned regarding the instructions issued to Apprentice McMurray, noting that the filly had settled near the rear of the field in its previous start, Trainer L. Birchley advised he had instructed Apprentice McMurray to obtain the lead, stating the filly could be reluctant to exert itself under pressure and therefore felt that racing prominently would suit the filly better. He further added that last preparation the filly had raced over a shorter distance. Noting the explanation of Trainer L. Birchley, Stewards took no further action other than to remind him of his obligations AR100(1)(a) regarding declaring his horses potentially being ridden in a different manner to that in previous starts.

AURELIAN BLANC – Raced keenly in the early stages before commencing to over-race near the 900m when the pace slackened. Obliged to steady from heels approaching the 800m when continuing to over-race. Near the 1000m, shifted in to obtain a leading position before commencing to slacken the pace resulting in a number of runners over-racing and becoming awkwardly placed on heels. Jockey H. Richardson was strongly reminded of her obligations under AR131(d) when reducing the pace of a race to do so in a manner that doesn’t cause interference. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

Race 5: DAVID CORY MEMORIAL BENCHMARK 55 HANDICAP (1100m)

Correct weight was delayed allowing connections of second placegetter INATICK to view footage of the home straight. Once both Trainer P. Wallace and Apprentice O. Webb and Stewards were similarly satisfied that there were no grounds for objections, correct weight was declared on the Judges’ semaphored numbers.

RIVER DANZKA – Began awkwardly. Held-up for clear running rounding the home turn and bumped DUCHESS OF MILAN. Obliged to be steadied off heels near the 300m when held-up for clear running. Laid out near the 300m.

BERAKAHQUINN – Near the 300m, checked and lost ground when APPLECROSS laid in and away from SEA COMMITS which shifted in marginally. Bumped the running rail for several strides thereafter. As Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied the incident was directly attributable to one specific rider, Stewards took no further action other than to advise all riders to exercise greater care.

CRAIGLEA LAKI – Commenced to hang-out in the early stages of the event before commencing to race wide and without cover. Commenced to hang-out near the 400m before continuing to do so rounding the home-turn and in the early part of the home straight proving difficult to ride out. Trainer K. COTTON CAPER – Laid out under pressure in the home straight.

Race 6: WARWICK AUTOMOTICE PICNIC CUP BENCHMARK 60 HANDICAP (1500m)

Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards considered an objection lodged by connections of fourth placegetter (THE GOLDEN SOUL) against third placegetter (LORD LUKER) alleging interference in the home straight. After taking evidence from both parties, and viewing the relevant footage, it was established that approaching the 200m, THE GOLDEN SOUL commenced to lay in, before being corrected by its rider. It was further established that near the 100m, LORD LUKER whilst under riding may have marginally brushed with THE GOLDEN SOUL for a number of strides, however when considering the manner in which both runners finished off the event, that both riders were afforded full opportunity to test their mounts to the finish, and the 1/2 head margin, Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that THE GOLDEN SOUL would have finished in advance of LORD LUKER and subsequently dismissed the protest.

SO DAPPER – A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

PICKO ROCKS – Raced wide and without cover for majority of the event. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

FLYING ROTHE – Slow to begin. Laid in near the 200m and bumped MARTINI DANCER.

RANGI TOA – Apprentice Z. Sprie advised the gelding was inclined to hang-out throughout the event. Apprentice Sprie pleaded guilty to a charge under AR131(b) in that he did fail to ride his mount fully to the finish over the final two strides of the event, and in doing so, may have prejudiced his mount’s opportunity of finishing fourth. Apprentice Sprie was subsequently fined $300. In assessing penalty, Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that when considering the 1/2 head margin that his mount would have definitively finished in fourth place, however were of the opinion that Apprentice Sprie’s vigour was far below the expected standard. Stewards further took into account his guilty plea, good record, and status as an Apprentice. Apprentice Sprie was advised of his rights to an appeal.

LORD LUKER (IRE) – Brushed with THE GOLDEN SOUL for several strides near the 100m.

MARTINI DANCER – Bumped near the 200m.
