Passing the 1200m when BARTALUMBA improved to its outside commenced to over race and continued to do so for some distance. Jockey M Murphy could offer no explanation for the poor performance other than it over racing in the early stages may have had an effect on its finishing sprint. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding which weakened in the home straight failed to reveal any abnormalities.
