The start was delayed when the gelding underwent a veterinary examination when mucus was observed in the off-side nostril. The horse was subsequently cleared to start. Jockey J. Lloyd reported at scale in the early stages he was obliged to pressure his mount to hold a position and the horse raced greenly, and after having obtained the lead in the home straight was somewhat reluctant to finish the race off and advised stewards he indicated to connections the horse would perhaps benefit from the addition of winkers to its gear.
