Began awkwardly. Near the 1500 meters when over-racing shifted out marginally and clipped the off-side heel of SIGNAL ROW, blundered and lost ground. Rider C Caserta stated that the slow early tempo of the race did not suit HEEYA, and when attempting to improve into the race from the 700 meters was forced wider on the track and when placed under pressure only finished the race off fairly.

Raced three wide in the early stages. When asked to explain tactics in the early stages of the event when it appeared he would obtain the lead easily on MONT ROYAL before electing to restrain, apprentice S Tomlinson stated instructions were to obtain cover if possible, however when SIGNAL ROW commenced to over-race to his inside he elected to restrain for a short distance before soon after near the 1200 meters allowing MONT ROYAL to stride forward to the position outside the leader. After Stewards expressed their concerns to Apprentice S Tomlinson he agreed he would have been better served to
