Supreme Falcon notched his first win over the weekend, and Burman was surprised how quickly he’s come on after his initial 500 a fortnight ago.
“Supreme Falcon started off at Ipswich over the 500 a couple of weeks ago, led for a long way and didn’t quite run it out so we dropped him back to the 431 and he got out in front and ran some nice time (25.25),” she said.
“He’s one that hasn’t shown us a huge amount at home but looks to be taking pretty big jumps now we’ve got him to the racetrack.”
Still in their infancy, there’s plenty to figure out about all six, and the Burmans are keen to see where they are in a few months’ time.
“The whole litter are going to be well above average, it’s just hard to predict at 18 months how they line up against each other and if we have some really handy ones in there,” she said.
“The ones I haven’t mentioned are Big Boy Benji who copped a back check at Ipswich on debut Saturday night, Elegant Ruby who finished down the track to Smart Lilly and one yet to start Happy Hornet, I always like to put Hornet in one of their names - they can all run too.”
Finding a great brood bitch in Bizarre Barbie is a huge tick for any kennel but the work behind the scenes to make sure everything goes to plan sometimes goes unnoticed, and a lot of the Burmans’ success comes down to their dedication.
“Ray was pretty adamant he wanted to go to Aston Dee Bee with Bizarre Barbie for this litter, he won a lot of races with speed over the 500 where the dam was a stayer, so hoping to get a few traits from each - that was our choice,” Burman said.
“To get a good brood bitch like Bizarre Barbie is the dream, she’s produced four litters for us now and mothered all our best dogs; Champagne Sally, Magic Hornet early on, then Big Boy Bruce, Dynamite Lucy and Blue Diva, and now this lot who can hopefully keep the roll going.
“The line goes right back to the foundation mother Up And Down who has thrown that many daughters who’ve become successful brood bitches - it’s terrific.”
The Burmans got a well-deserved pat on the back at the recent Greyhound of the Year awards, with the current trio earning their mother a trophy.
“We were very humbled to take home the Brood Bitch of the Year award; Big Boy Bruce in particular has just been fantastic lately and add Dynamite Lucy’s consistency and a healthy Blue Diva and they’ve been a pretty amazing trio,” Burman said.
“The prize money is outstanding; Big Boy Bruce hasn’t won a feature race and he’s up over $160,000 and out after Champagne Sally ($233,000) who got $75,000 of that from winning a Group race.”
Bizarre Barbie can’t go on whelping litters forever, but the Burmans are one step ahead with some of her famed progeny already having litters on the ground.
“We’ve got some Champagne Sally pups coming through that are 10 months at the moment and some Magic Hornets that are 15 months, I’ve just had a couple come back from the breakers and early signs are they can really run,” Burman said.
“The three other Magic Hornets are going down to northern New South Wales the middle of this month to get broken in down there, and we’ll just start them whenever they’re ready to go.
“It’s pretty remarkable we bred those dogs hoping they would be half decent and now they’ve come full circle and are looking like two brood bitches for the present and future.”
