QUEENSLANDRACING INTEGRITY COMMISSION STEWARDS REPORT MAREEBA TURF CLUB INC. SATURDAY 20 MAY 2023 WEATHER – FINE TRACK RATING – GOOD (4) RAIL – TRUE OFFICIALS Chairman of Stewards – P. LaneSteward – S. Copelin, S. Coulthard Clerk of Scales – B. Gray Judge – A. Ballard Veterinarian – Dr E. Maloney Swab Attendant – Dr E. Maloney Starter – B. Brady The following overweights were permitted:Race 7, Merry Old Soul – M. Abe + 1kg, Day To Favour – A. Thomson + 1kg The following runners which had not raced for an extended period, underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and were cleared to start.Race 1, Ballroom Boss Race 6, Modernism Race 1: MAREEBA TURF CLUB MAIDEN PLATE – MAIIDEN PLATE – 900 Metres BALLROOM BOSS – Delayed the start when proved difficult to load. Trainer M. Dale was advised a warning would be placed on the gelding’s barrier manners. Steadied when racing in restricted room near the 600 metres. APACHE MINTO – Inconvenienced when tightened for room between runners on jumping. TAMINGO FOLLIES – Raced wide in the early and middle stages. NORTHERN GIRL – Jockey S. Sheargold advised stewards on returning to scale that the mare raced greenly over the concluding stages. Race 2: REX PETERSEN'S BOB CAT HIRE CLASS B HANDICAP – 900 Metres BOWTIE BETTY – Shifted in at the start bumping with TORQUE SENSATION. TORQUE SENSATION – Bumped on jumping. SIMPLY BEANS – Raced wide for the majority of the race. AIR FORCE ACE – Finished tailed off. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Trainer G. Tsakissiris gave an undertaking to advise stewards should anything come to his attention in the near future that may have had a bearing on its performance today. Race 3:WICKED INTENT MAIDEN PLATE – 1210 Metres KANGALOON – Began awkwardly. Hampered near the 100 metres. MUMBO BOWLER – Unable to muster early speed. PROJECT PAPERCLIP – Laid out rounding the home-turn forcing GREAT SURVEY wider. Inclined to lay out in the home straight and hampered KANGALOON near the 100 metres. Jockey R. Shred was advised to stop riding and straighten her mount in similar circumstances. ROTHGURL – Raced keenly approaching the 800 metres. When asked to explain its performance today which was below expectations, rider N. Day stated the mare failed to respond to his riding and was disappointing. Trainer F. Wieland advised stewards the mare had performed poorly in previous starts at this course and he would now be more selective when placing ROTHGURL in future starts. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. GREAT SURVEY – Forced wider rounding the home turn by PROJECT PAPERCLIP which laid out. Raced wide for the majority of the race. BERGKAMP – Jockey S. Wilson was reprimanded under the provisions of AR132(5) in that he used his whip on 15 occasions which is one more than is permitted. This was jockey S. Wilson’s first recent breach of this rule. Race 4: GRAHAM HOTEL 2023 BATTLE OF THE BUSH MAREEBA QUALIFIER OPEN HANDICAP – 1210 Metres COCHRANE – Blundered on jumping. MISTER LARRABEE – Slow to begin. Shifted in marginally under pressure near the 100 metres. SYLVESTER – Raced wide in the middle stages. Inconvenienced over the concluding stages when racing in restricted room between LOUD NOISE and mister LARRABEE, both of which shifted ground.LOUD NOISE – Shifted out under pressure in the home straight. YOSHI TORANAGA – Jockey S. Wilson advised stewards on returning to scale that the gelding raced ungenerously for the majority of the race and tired over the concluding stages. Trainer F. Wieland advised that following today’s performance it is now his intention that YOSHI TORONAGA be retired from racing.A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Race 5: PATRON CUP QTIS BENCHMARK 55 HANDICAP – 1210 Metres HERVOR– After becoming fractious in the tie-up stalls prior to the race, it underwent a veterinary examination and was declared a late scratching at 12.03pm by order of stewards acting on veterinary advice after injuring its nearside hind leg and nearside pelvis. Trainer M. Potiris was advised she must provide a veterinary clearance for the mare prior to its next race start or trial. BUWAN – A pre-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the near foreleg and was declared a late scratching at 1.35pm by order of stewards acting on veterinary advice. Trainer S. Hill was advised he must provide a veterinary clearance including xray results for BUWAN prior to its next race start or trial. NEVETON – Shifted out across heels near the 100 metres to obtain clear running. ENUFF GOLD – Slow to begin and tailed off for the remainder of the race. Correct weight was delayed allowing trainer B. Thomson to view the start of the race to ascertain if the mare had been afforded a fair start. After viewing the available footage Ms Thomson was satisfied ENUFF GOLD was afforded a fair start and correct weight was declared on the judge’s semaphored numbers. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. KINGSMATE – Was restrained shortly after the start to obtain a position closer to the inside running rail. BELLE ADELE – Over-raced in the early stages. Restrained off heels near the 1000 metres. Jockey N. Day reported the mare travelled well throughout the race however only finished off fairly. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. SPIRIT MEISTER – Jockey M. Abe was cautioned in relation to the use of his whip prior to the 100 metres. Race 6: 7HR GRAZING OPEN HANDICAP – 1500 Metres MODERNISM – Shifted out shortly after the start bumping SIZZLING SUN. SIZZLING SUN – Slow into stride and then bumped shorlly after the start by MODERNISM which shifted out. LOVE ON SUNDAY – Jockey S. Wilson advised stewards on returning to scale that in hisopinion the heavy impost and a dropback in distance was a telling factor on today’s performance. Race 7: MAGIC MILLIONS/ROB KOCH MEMORIAL/FNQ UP & COMING STAYERS BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP – 1800 Metres MOTAMAYIZ(GB) – Slowly into stride after being tightened between runners after jumping. MERRY OLD SOUL(NZ) – Raced wide from the 800 metres. I LOVE ROCK’N’ROLL – Raced ungenerously passing the 600 metres. DAMMOSQUITO –Jockey S Sheargold pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR132(5) in that he used his whip 18 times in totality in running. Jockey Sheargold’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 7 days to commence 21st May 2023 up to and including the27th May 2023. Jockey Sheargold was advised of his right to appeal. Jockeys S Wilson and R Shred were both cautioned in relation to an incident which took place prior to re-entering the parade yard following the running of this event.
