RACE 1: MAIDEN PLATE1000 Metres

COALBANK CAVIAR – severely checked and lost significant ground leaving the 800 metres when taken wider by another runner.

TRIPLE WON – severely checked and lost significant ground leaving the 800 metres when taken wider by another runner.

WEE DRAGON – hung out badly leaving the 800 metres, shifted to the outside fence despite the efforts of its rider, and was subsequently retired from the event. Trainer T Gillespie was advised WEE DRAGON would be required to trial satisfactorily on two (2) occasions prior to its next race start. A post race Vet examination of the mare failed to reveal any abnormalities.

DIAMONDINE – rider reported at scale hampered on jumping away when the outside barrier partition sprung back.


RACE 2: BENCHMARK 50 HDCP1000 Metres

I AM MCLOVIN – caught wide majority of the event.

MONTE LAGO – caught wide in early and middle stages of the event.

WHATEVER MISS – raced wide majority of the event.

JILL’S SHADOW – when questioned regarding performance rider stated that with the addition of blinkers today, the filly was inclined to race greenly at different stages of the event, and in her opinion would be better suited to races over a longer distance.

CHOSEN COURT – held up for clear running between 400 metres and 200 metres. Obliged to alter course to obtain clear running inside 100 metres.

MARREW MIA – after being loaded into the barriers broke through dislodging its rider and galloped a significant distance, and subsequently declared a late scratching at 2.06pm by order of stewards. On declaration of correct weight all bets on MARREW MIA were ordered to be refunded, with deductions of 4 cents win and 5 cents place to apply on face value of all winning bets. Rider P Romeo was examined by QAS staff and cleared to fulfil his engagements at the Toowoomba meeting.



RACE 3: BENCHMARK 60 HDCP 1200 Metres

I’M NO RUBY – shifted out under pressure over final 150 metres resulting in another runner being hampered. Rider advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

EIGHT CHANCE – slow to begin. Hampered when tightened for room over the concluding stages.

SIMPLY SHOWTIME – shifted in under pressure over the concluding stages resulting in its rider having to stop riding and straighten his mount.

BOLD SHADOW – when questioned regarding below market performance, App A Spinks stated the gelding was unable to maintain a forward position despite his efforts and settled further back in the field than anticipated. He added BOLD SHADOW felt short in its action in the run, and in his opinion did not appreciate today’s firm surface. A post race Vet examination failed to reveal any abnormality.

CANID – declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow rider A Badger to view the photo finish image for first place. After doing so correct weight was declared on the judges’ placings.
A Badger was fined $200 for excessive use of the whip prior to 100 metres.



RACE 4: OPEN HDCP 1200 Metres

MISTER BOOZE – when questioned regarding below market performance, rider S Bayliss stated the gelding travelled well to the 600 metres , but when placed under pressure soon after failed to respond to his riding and was disappointing. A post race Vet examination of MISTER BOOZE failed to reveal any abnormality.




RACE 5: BENCHMARK 55HDCP 1600 Metres

IL PADRONE– rider reported at scale raced further back in field than anticipated and was not suited by slow pace in early and middle stages of the event. Disappointed for a run between runners rounding the home turn, then obliged to shift wider in home straight to obtain clear running.

CARRY TO GOLD – held up for some distance leaving 500 metres until approaching the home turn.
BILO BAR – checked near 1300 metres when another runner shifted in when not sufficiently clear.

RAGE WITHIN – rider S Bayliss pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 1300 metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of BILO BAR resulting in that runner having to check and lose ground. S Bayliss was suspended for a period of 8 days to commence midnight 28th May up to and including midnight 5th June 2016. In assessing penalty stewards took into account S Bayliss’ excellent riding record and his guilty plea. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of RAGE WITHIN, rider stated after being caught wide the mare raced more forward than anticipated, however when placed under pressure near the 600 metres failed to respond to his riding. S Bayliss further stated in his opinion the firm track in addition to it being 4 weeks between runs contributed to today’s performance. A post race Vet exam failed to reveal any abnormality.
