Race 1: BERT ANDERSEN'S CARPET ONE MAIDEN H'CAP – 1600M

ROYAL ATOM – Slow to begin. Disappointed for a run leaving the 600m and had to be steadied and was again held up for clear running near the 450m.

STREET COMIC – Slow to begin. Raced wide from the 600m and then forced wider rounding the home turn.

LAUDABLE LEMON – Improved on to heels near the 600m and had to be steadied before shifting wider on the track. Hung out rounding the home turn.

MISS ODETTE – Commenced to hang out whilst weakening from the 700m and finished a distant last. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities, however apprentice B. Newport indicated that in his opinion the horse felt short in its action returning to scale. Stewards therefore ordered trainer E. Ensby to provide a veterinary certificate and the horse was also ordered to trial prior to its next start.

The start was delayed when OH BOY reared in the barriers, became cast and underwent a veterinary inspection. Baldwin was advised that he must obtain a further barrier certificate for OH BOY before it is permitted to race again.

CHIC SOX – Bumped by another runner after passing the 600m and became unbalanced.

COOCHIN BOY – Trainer D. Hansen was fined $100 for the late declaration of L. Tarrant as rider. Raced greenly throughout and weakened over the concluding stages. A warning was placed on the horse’s racing manners. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a mild respiratory infection. Trainer D. Hansen was advised to provide to stewards the results of an endoscopic examination.

Race 6: TROY TREVITT HOMES BENCHMARK 75 H'CAP – 1400M

Stewards opened an inquiry into the tactics adopted by apprentice B. Panya (SAMBUCA SHOT) and apprentice T. Brooker (NEARCTIC CHILLER) in relation to the fast pace which was set when both horses were leading by a considerable distance during the first 800m of this event. Stewards expressed concerns that neither apprentice appeared to attempt to steady, despite a very fast pace being set. Apprentice Panya explained that as her horse has a history of overracing and had overraced badly at its most recent start she had been instructed not to restrain SAMBUCA SHOT as trainer R. Wilson had envisaged the horse would obtain the lead and lead comfortably. Apprentice Brooker explained that she had also been instructed to allow her horse to stride as similarly the horse has had a tendency to overrace in the past. She indicated that she had made endeavours to steady at a point approaching the 1000m, however when her horse was positioned outside SAMBUCA SHOT, the gelding became very keen and shifted in and made contact with SAMBUCA SHOT near the 900m, resulting in the horse again racing more keenly. She indicated that at this point she allowed the horse to stride forward and crossed to the lead near the 600m. Both apprentices accepted that the pace in the early stages was faster than they would have liked, however given their instructions felt their actions were reasonable in the circumstances. Both trainer R. Wilson (SAMBUCA SHOT) and S. Kendrick (NEARCTIC CHILLER) confirmed the instructions and both trainers were satisfied with the way in which the apprentices rode their respective mounts given the circumstances when their horses both raced keenly. Stewards, after viewing the patrol footage, agreed that Ms Brooker had made endeavours to steady her mount near the 1000m and agreed that both horses have had a history of overracing. Stewards did advise both apprentices that more effort should have been made in the early stages, however given the finishing effort of NEARCTIC CHILLER did not feel that any action should be taken against Ms Brooker or Ms Panya, and in forming this opinion, stewards were mindful of both riders’ status as apprentices.

FAST ARROW – Tightened for room at the start. Laid in under pressure in the home straight, causing its rider to stop riding and straighten near the 100m.

FRANK WHO – Significantly interfered with and checked at the start, losing ground.

SAMBUCA SHOT – Jumped away awkwardly.

FASTA THAN LIGHT – Jumped away awkwardly, making heavy contact with another runner. Shifted out near the 400m, made contact with another runner and buffeted with that runner on a number of occasions and became unbalanced.

VENECIA – Inconvenienced by another runner at the start. Steadied near the 900m. Apprentice H. English, the rider of CRAWFISH, was reprimanded for allowing her mount to shift in near the 900m. Checked and lost significant ground near the 500m and was unable to improve into the race until leaving the 400m. Apprentice H. English, the rider of CRAWFISH, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 500m, whilst riding her mount along and slapping it down the shoulder, she permitted her mount to shift in, resulting in interference to VENECIA. Apprentice English’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 9 days, to commence at midnight on Sunday 15 January and expire at midnight on Tuesday 24 January 2017.

SHOWER OF HEARTS – Jumped extremely awkwardly and continued to shift in despite the efforts of its rider and as a result took no competitive part in the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings. Trainer B. Lockwood’s representative was advised that the horse must officially trial prior to its next start.

STONECAST – Slow to begin. Bumped by another runner near the 400m on a number of occasions and became unbalanced as a result.

The start of this race was delayed in order to hold for another racing venue on Sky Channel

NIGHT ATTIRE – Became unbalanced when bumped on the hindquarters by another runner approaching the 200m.

THE PERPETRATOR – Tightened for room at the start and lost ground. Held up from rounding the home turn until approaching the 200m.

BEL CLASSICO – Overraced for a short distance near the 900m.Tightened for room approaching the 200m, taken out on to the hindquarters of another runner, had to be checked and lost ground. B. Pengelly, the rider of THE PERPETRATOR, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that approaching the 200m he directed his mount out to obtain clear running and in doing so caused interference to BEL CLASSICO and NIGHT ATTIRE. B. Pengelly’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 11 days, to commence at midnight on Saturday 14 January and expire at midnight on Wednesday 25 January 2017.
