Joining the course proper near the 600 metres, OURBOYBYRON (Jockey W. D’Avila) had to be steadied when racing tight to the inside of CRAIGLEA AMITY (Jockey P. Cullen), which shifted in when not quite clear. Jockey Cullen was severely reprimanded and advised to ensure that he leaves sufficient racing room for runners to his inside.

OUTBACK TYCOON – A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding, which raced wide throughout and weakened noticeably in the straight, revealed that it was displaying signs of respiratory distress. WICKED CRIME – When Jockey J. P. Stanley was indisposed due to injury, stewards permitted Jockey N. Day to be substituted as rider of the gelding. Jockey Stanley was advised that he must furnish a medical clearance prior to being permitted to ride again. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance, Jockey N. Day explained that he rode his mount vigorously throughout, however it did not respond and never travelled comfortably at any stage. He said that in his opinion the gelding may be better suited over longer distances. Trainer Mr R. Long expressed disappointment with the performance and said that it now his intention to have blood taken from the gelding and undertook to forward the results to the stewards in the ensuing days. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any significant abnormalities.

STAR FURY – Began very awkwardly with its head up and lost ground. On returning to scale Apprentice C. Dell reported that his mount was inclined to lay in under pressure in the home straight.

1st – SHEKOU 2nd – FIESTY BELLE 3rd – CASTLE EXPRESS 4th – PRESS PLAY

PAYTEEVEE – Slow to begin.

PRESS PLAY – When questioned regarding the gelding leading, Jockey W. D’Avila said that he had been instructed to take up a leading position from the inside barrier. He stated that he had to make some use of his mount in the early stages to comply with his instructions, and after obtaining the lead, although he was aware that he had established a considerable lead on the remainder of the field, his mount travelled comfortably. He added that, after being in a position to obtain easier sectionals between the 800 metres and the 400 metres, he then placed his mount under pressure and it ran to the finish fairly. Trainer Mr R. Chillemi explained that the instructions issued had been to take advantage of the inside draw, however he was surprised that the gelding was able to establish such a significant lead. Mr Chillemi was reminded of his obligation to notify Stewards of any change in tactics.

FIESTY BELLE – Raced keenly in the early stages.
