He explained that he rode his mount hard in the early stages in an endeavour to comply with instructions and take up a handy position, however, after doing so he was aware that a number of runners to his outside were showing superior speed and as he was concerned he was making too much use of his mount, he therefore elected to steady and allow runners to cross. He said when crossed by SUPER MARS, that horse then steadied, resulting in him being placed one position further back than he had anticipated. He added that from the 500m to the 400m he was held up behind runners and could not improve
