When questioned regarding the tactics adopted, apprentice A. Thompson stated that he pressed forward as per instructions, adding that he initially intended to sit outside the leader, but for a short distance from his wide barrier pressured his mount in an attempt to go forward and maybe obtain the lead but was not able to do so, and then restrained to a position outside the leader, albeit racing keenly in that position.
