On return to scale some blood was evident in one nostril. A veterinary examination determined that there was an abrasion to the geldings nostril which appeared to be caused by a head knock in the gates.

Steward Comment

Began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped MILLION. Stewards questioned Jockey C. Frater regarding the tactics adopted on WHITEBAIT PATTIE. Jockey Frater stated that the instructions were to remain neutral out of the gates in an attempt to get the gelding to settle and prevent it from over-racing. The gelding then continued to lose contact with the second last horse despite Jockey Fraters efforts. Trainer T. Cowan confirmed instructions, however, expected the gelding to race more prominently. A post-race vet. exam. - lame off hind leg. Cast near fore plate.
