A veterinary examination of the horse, which was kicked in the tie-up stalls, cleared the gelding to race. A further examination at the barriers cleared the horse to race. Had a tendency to lay in over the final 100m, causing jockey B. Stewart to stop riding. Jockey B. Stewart was fined $200 for using his whip more than 5 times prior to the 100m. In determining penalty, stewards took into account jockey Stewart’s good recent record regarding breaches of this rule and that this event was a staying race.
