On returning to scale, Jockey J. Oliver could offer no tangible explanation for the seemingly disappointing performance of the gelding, which weakened over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse to have excess mucus in the upper airways consistent with the onset of a virus which may have affected the horse’s performance.
