When asked to comment on the seemingly improved performance today, Trainer J. Smerdon explained that COMMISSIONER was having its first start for him today. The gelding has pleased him in its work leading up to todays event including performing well in a recent jump out and trial and he expected a forward showing in todays event. Stewards noted his explanation.

Raced three wide without cover throughout. Passing the 300m was disappointed for a run to the outside of PARKO which shifted out under pressure and was then obliged to alter course back to the inside of that runner to secure clear running and in doing so bumped on a number of occasions with DEPTHS BELOW.

As the gelding has not started for over 12 months, it underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was cleared to start. After entering the home straight, commenced to weaken. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the off hind leg. Trainer J. Perry was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the horse trialling or racing again.
