When questioned Apprentice said that from the wide draw, when runners to his inside showed superior speed, he elected to ride his mount back in the field with cover, where it travelled comfortably. He said that near the 600 metres he placed the gelding under pressure, however it did not respond to his riding. He added that in his opinion the gelding may not have backed up from its most recent start. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
