Apprentice Grylls indicated she had not initially been inclined to improve into that run as she did not wish to race on the fence in the home straight as she felt the track was inferior on the inside. She added that near the 400m she did take a run on the fence and again steadied the horse near the 200m when it appeared AURUM LAD commenced to lay in. She added the horse was doing its best work over the concluding stages and would appreciate a step up in distance which would enable the horse to take up a more forward position

Eilbeck reported it had been her intention to ride the horse in a forward position, however after beginning awkwardly she was obliged to steady and take up a trailing position. She added that the horse overraced in the early and middle stages as a result. After being held up on the home turn was again obliged to alter course after passing the 300m and in doing so made contact with another runner. Then had some difficulty securing clear running over the final 100m.

A pre race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have a loose tooth, however was cleared to race. Had a tendency to lay in under pressure whilst weakening and was obliged to check near the 200m after laying in on to the heels of SHREWVELON after laying in on to the heels of SHREWVELON, which shifted out under pressure. Miss R. Myers, rider of SHREWVELON, was reprimanded for failing to stop riding and straighten when shifting ground.
