The start was delayed when the horse had to be resaddled. Slow to begin. Steadied from heels near the 400m. Held up for clear running passing the 300m. A post race veterinary examination revealed the horse to have pulled up in a distressed state.

Raced 5 wide without cover. When asked to explain the tactics employed on the horse, jockey R. Stewart indicated he had been instructed from the wide barrier to attempt to obtain cover. He stated that when steading his mount in the early stages the gelding commenced to overrace and he was unable to obtain a position closer to the fence with cover. He added that near the 800m, after overracing, he elected to try to improve to the lead, however the horse then did not have sufficient pace to improve around the horses to his inside.
