Bumped at the start. Stewards questioned Apprentice regarding his riding of the gelding. He said that he had been instructed to ride the gelding midfield with cover. He added that approaching the 600 metres his mount raced keenly and improved onto the heels of the eventual winner and shifted out, resulting in him then having to sustain a 4-wide run without cover from the 600 metres. Apprentice concurred with stewards that he would have been better served by attempting to remain racing on the back of the winner, rather than place too much effort on his mount, and improve from that point.
